Building a Successful Private Music Teaching Studio
On December 4, 2005, PrivateLessons.com held a small round table panel discussion with Philadelphia area members. This private event marks a transition from our Internet-based forum Building a Successful Private Music Teaching Studio to a round table format with PrivateLessons.com members as panelists. Now with 10 years of Internet marketing experience PrivateLessons.com is taking its music business forum on the road.

Invitation-only event assembled a small group of successful PrivateLessons.com members. We were so pleased that they were able to participate during the busiest time of the season. Yes, we offered sweet holiday treats, but it seemed that panelists were hungrier to exchange music business knowledge. The conversation flowed effortlessly, free of formal start and end time. Philadelphia panelists represented a cross-section of music instruments and musical genres. A New York native, Loren West is a talented Rock guitarist and songwriter whose video was one of the first on MTV. His private guitar studio in Center City Philadelphia is completely overbooked, which brought up an important point of re-distribution of student inquiries back to PrivateLessons.com network. We met Susan Anders Brizick in 2004 at the NATS National Convention in New Orleans. Since then she has become a loyal PrivateLessons.com supporter. Susan has a successful voice studio in Paoli (Philadelphia area), soon to expand to West Chester. A performing musician, Susan teaches classical voice and popular singing styles. Susan underscored the importance of a good match between teacher and student. A clear direction and enjoyable working relationship helps her students grow and achieve their goals.
A recent addition to PrivateLessons.com roster, Lou Walinsky happily announced his immediate successes in acquiring students via PrivateLessons.com network. An experienced educator and performer, he is building up a private class of piano students. Lou emphasized that creativity is essential to designing individualized programs for his students. He helps students enjoy the musical discovery process as if it were a fun puzzle, a method reminiscent to his own learning style.
All initial contact between prospective students and PrivateLessons.com members comes by way of e-mail communication. While PrivateLessons.com uses screening methodology, teachers must further qualify each student inquiry with a great deal of seriousness. This part of discussion became super interesting as each member made valuable observations on prospective students' initial e-mail inquiry style and meaning. Managing inquires properly can mean significant growth in studio size. Loren West commented that his best student originally e-mailed him a short and loaded question: "How much do you charge?"
