How to Select the Right Vocal Coach

As a voice student, I recall the first time I worked with an opera coach who had a voice type that I could actually imitate. I had worked with men and older women, all good teachers, but who no longer could demonstrate and it was a revelation to be able to hear the correlating sound of my own future voice.
Now that I am a vocal coach and working with developing and professional singers, most of whom have similar vocal ranges as myself, I find that the demonstration and imitation element of the lessons are of the utmost importance. I am still a very busy performing operatic and symphonic soloist, so I have an intimate empathy for and knowledge of what my students go through in their auditions and performances. I know, first hand, how frustrating it is to deal with allergies or respiratory ailments and how to combat them and have to perform any way.
Musicianship, empathy and flexibility, in my experience, are much more important than academic credentials in choosing a vocal coach. Neither a Doctorate in Vocal Performance, nor Medical expertise as an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist guarantees one's ability to correctly engage the imagination of the singing student, truly the only real measure of a good vocal instructor!
