Choosing the Right Singer/Songwriter Coach

By Rob Mullins
Los Angeles area instructor, author, and performer
A growing number of my students are in a relatively new category -- that of the singer/songwriter.
Choosing a singer/songwriter coach is a special situation for most singer/songwriters because:
1. most singer/songwriters have no idea where to go for coaching
2. few traditional teachers offer this service or type of coaching
3. many singer/songwriters are very attached to their music and are afraid of criticism of their material.
With these special considerations in mind, it is important for the singer/songwriter to choose a teacher/coach/mentor that has the following qualities:
1. knowledge of history of singer/songwriter's songs and styles
2. curriculum to support the student's goals
3. some understanding of the guitar even if the teacher's main instrument is piano
4. understanding of music theory relevant to the student's prospective musical styles and needs
For students, I would recommend that they look for a teacher with a songwriting background, one with published song material under their own name or as a co-writer. Also, a good understanding of radio music would be essential. The ability of a teacher to hear and explain song structure and chord voicings from music that the student brings into lessons on CD is vital for this kind of study to be effective.
Of course, a positive personal relationship between singer/songwriter and teacher/coach is important because singer/songwriter types have such a close relationship to their material. When meeting with a singer/songwriter coach ask yourself these questions:
1. can I get a long with this person?
2. is this person's own music at least as good as mine?
3. will I be able to take criticism from this teacher without it being a problem?
If your answer to the above questions and information is yes, then you have found the right person for your needs. If not, you should keep looking.
In my experience in Hollywood, a good singer/songwriter teacher can bolster the confidence of a singer/songwriter for live performance, give them the theoretical basis for understanding their own music, and suggest ways to improve the student compositionally based on their own experience as a writer and performer.
