How to Select the Right Private Flute Teacher

By Tiffany Holmes
I strongly encourage taking a "test" lesson with a teacher before you commit to what one would hope to be a long-lasting student/teacher relationship. I offer the first lesson for free in my studio. I find that it's a very small price to pay for getting to know a student and how well you may or may not work together. You can learn a lot from just one lesson. If a teacher doesn't offer the first lesson free, then ... perhaps ask if you may sit in on a lesson taught by the teacher, with of course the permission of the student whose lesson you are auditing.
And most of all, ASK QUESTIONS when you are inquiring about lessons to begin with. Before you call, write down a list of important questions you may have for the teacher. Find out how many other students of your age & level he/she teaches. Ask how long he/she has been teaching. Get references. No question is a stupid question.
