Roberto Kalb
Composer, Conductor and Pianist, Roberto Kalb was born and raised in Mexico City. He began his keyboard studies at the age of 8 with renowned Cuban pianist Marcia Freyre de Andrade. While living in Mexico City, he gained experience in both piano performance and conducting. He gave a number of performances in concert halls such as the Sala Chopin, Sala Veerkamp and the Teatro Metropolitan. In the summer of 2004 Kalb attended the Interlochen Arts Program where he received the prestigious Maddy Summer Artist Award; during his residence he studied composition and orchestration with Dr. John Beall, and conducting with Michael Kaufman. In 2006 he composed and conducted the score for Leon Choi’s award winning independent film Blind Love. In July of 2007 Kalb attended the EAMA (European American Musical Alliance) program at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris where he studied composition with Juilliard Composition Chair Dr. Robert Beaser and counterpoint with Dr. Phillip Lasser. In 2008 he became the first person to ever be admitted into both the conducting and composition programs at EAMA. He studied conducting with Maestro Marc Shapiro and composition with Narcis Bonet. Kalb currently attends the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he not only pursues his degree in composition but has conducted members of the Conservatory Orchestra in works from the standard orchestral repertoire as well as a vast amount of new music. He is currently a composition student of Elinor Armer and studies piano with Scott Foglesong.
