John Childers
I'm an accomplished, performing jazz and improvisatory musician. (And I perform legit stuff, too, but don't tell anybody.)
I taught public High School for two years.
I'm not your run-of-the-mill music teacher. I believe in developing a passion for whatever you do, so be ready ;~}.
As a teacher, I'm big on "chunking" information together in digestible bites, and helping you grow in small steps toward your larger goal (we'll start by talking about where you want to grow as a musician).
I'm not a Suzuki teacher, but I like Mr. Suzuki's attitude toward teaching music, " . . . every student is capable of a high level of music achievement."
I'd be happy to teach you the basics of playing the saxophone or clarinet, to help you grow as a player, to help you move up a chair or two in band, etc., but I'm really best at teaching intermediate to advanced students how to play in a jazz style and improvise.
If you study jazz with me, you'll follow a diverse curriculum including working from:
- Patterns for Jazz (I've actually met Jerry Coker and took lessons from one of his co-authors).
- Berklee College of Music Sax methods
- Jamie Aebersold repertoire and play-alongs
I can also help you learn how to get past the fear of performing and have fun on-stage.
My resume as a player includes . . .
- Co-Leader, Key West Jazz Quartet (since 1996): Traditional jazz quartet that gigs 25-50 times per year playing festivals, weddings, events, and private parties.
Lead Tenor Saxophonist, Jazzhaus Big Band (since 1991): Rehearsal and dance band that gigs 5-10 times per year.
Lead Tenor, KU 1:30 Jazz Workshop (a long time ago ;~})
KU Basketball Band
Touring, full-time (rock & R&B) musician, 1977-1978
