Mei Rui

Mei Rui is an internationally award-winning concert pianist, an avid chamber musician, a dedicated piano teacher, and an adjunct Chemistry Professor at the Sophie Davis Biomedical School at the City University of New York. Born in Shanghai in 1983, she began her piano studies at the age of three. A Magna Cum Laude graduate from Yale, she finished her undergraduate degree in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, followed by a Masters degree and an Artist Diploma from Yale School of Music. She played solo recitals in Beijing, Brussels, Hong Kong, New Haven, New York, San Francisco, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Taiwan, Fort Worth, and Vienna, and has soloed with the Beijing Radio Symphony, the Shanghai Philharmonia Orchestras, the Manhattan School of Music Orchestra, and Yale Symphony Orchestra. Mei studied in Shanghai Conservatory of Music from 1986 to 1997. Before immigrating with her parents to the United States in 1997, she was the winner of numerous regional and national competitions in Chia. Her playing was broadcasted many times on national television. Scholarships and prizes in the United States include the Van Gelder Memorial Award, the McDermett Scholarship, the Lowenthal Fellowship, first prizes in the Manhattan School of Music Concerto Competition in 2001, the William Waite Concerto Competition in 2003, the Yale University Recital Competition in 2002, the Yale Chamber Music Celebration Concert, the Kingsville International Competition, the Kosciusko Chopin International Competition, the Stony Brook Concerto Competition in 2009. She was also the recipient of the prestigious Joseph Selden Memorial Award for excellence in the Arts, the Sheffield Scientific Scholarship in 2004, the Bruce Simonds Scholarship in 2006, and the George W. Miles Scholarship in 2007. Principal teachers include Claude Frank, Peter Frankl, and Gil Kalish, and Phillip Kawin. Summer festival appearances include the Van Cliburn Piano Institute , Music Academy of the West, Norfolk Festival, Taos School of Music, and Yellowbarn Chamber Music Festival
