My musical studies began when I was six. I first learned the basics of the instrument and how to read music and I HATED it. I begged my mother to let me stop taking lessons but when I started taking lessons with a local Jazz musician and joined my first band in Junior High, my whole outlook changed.
Working on songs with other musicians and learning how to improvise gave me freedom, motivation and a valuable creative outlet in life. In High School, I began playing local concerts in Philadelphia and spent two years playing piano for the Cheltenham High School Choirs. My studies continued at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston where four years of training earned me a degree in Piano Performance and Jazz Compotision. Aside from having the opportunity to perform a concert with THE YELLOWJACKETS, I studied privately with DANILO PEREZ, LAZLO GARDONY, HAL CROOK, BOB MOSES, FRANK CARLBERG and TIGER OKOSHI.c
While at Berklee, I began teaching piano lessons to children at the Advent Elementary School where I realized the importance of making music FUN and I apply the same element to any student I teach. I then moved back to Philadelphia and taught at the Meridee Winter's School of Music and The Music Training Center to gain more experience interacting and teaching piano. Currently, I teach students ranging from age 3-50+ in the homes of my private students. I continually practice, take classical piano lessons at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and gig with my band, MJ Project so that I can have more skills and experience to offer my students. I play and can teach my students any style they wish to learn including Jazz, Classical, Rock, Funk, Latin, Hip Hop, Drum and Bass and Ragtime.
