Reena Esmail
Reena Esmail graduated with a BM Composition from The Juilliard School in 2005. She began her musical studies in acoustic guitar, followed shortly by piano at age 11 and composition at age 17. As a pianist, Reena has performed at the Hollywood Bowl Museum, Zipper Hall at the Colburn School, and the Luckman Fine Arts Complex in Los Angeles, CA. She was a winner in the Los Angeles Philharmonic Chamber Music Competition, and performed with violinist Mark Baranov and cellist Barry Gold from the Los Angeles Philharmonic. As a composer, she was a recipient of the 2002 Morton Gould Young Composers Awards from ASCAP as well as the inaugural scholarship recipient of the Milton and Sylvia Babbitt Scholarship for Women Composers at Juilliard. Her works have been programmed at festivals in the United States, Canada and Europe, and her song cycle, "Unfortunate Coincidence" was recorded in 2005.r
Reena is as committed to her students as she is to her professional work. Her teaching approach is based on the philosophy that music is a form of expression, and that building good technique and practice habits are vehicles for cultivating that expression in each person. She has been teaching for seven years, and has taught adults and children of all ages and levels from beginner to advanced in both piano and composition. Recitals for her younger students and informal piano dinners for her adult students are held 2-3 times a year, giving each group an opportunity to try out new repertoire for a small and supportive audience, as well as to meet and hear other students play. Reena also offers her students the opportunity to take the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal School of Music) Piano Exams. As a composer, she is actively interested in expanding the repertoire for young musicians, and in addition to her concert work, has written a variety of solo and chamber music for students at the beginning and intermediate levels of study.c
In addition to her private students, Reena is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music, teaching theory and ear training in their Precollege Division.
