Frankie Hickman
With an undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Arkansas and a Master’s degree in the same from the University of Houston, Mrs. Hickman can also lay claim to more than seven years as a professional performer, and nearly four years as a teacher of voice and piano. After completing her degree at UA in 1996, Frankie moved to Houston immediately to begin her studies with renowned voice instructor Steven Smith, then a UH professor and now on faculty at The Juilliard School. During her graduate studies, Frankie taught private voice and piano and participated in Opera Young Artist Programs across the country./www.adw9
She continued to perform in and around Houston until the fall of 1999, when she was accepted into the prestigious Florida Grand Opera Young Artists Program. She spent a year in Miami, studying and attending Master Classes with some of the greatest teachers in the United States, performing supporting roles on the main stage at FGO, and brushing shoulders with the finest talent in American Opera. Impressing the program’s organizers and underwriters, Frankie was invited back to Miami for a second year.
At the end of 2002, Frankie returned to Houston with her husband Jay, where they have remained since. While in town, Frankie has performed with the Houston Grand Opera on numerous occasions, and welcomed the birth of baby daughter Jacqueline. The new addition to the family has helped to re-ignite Frankie’s long-standing passion for teaching piano and voice. In the Spring of 2004, Frankie opened a home studio for private piano and voice instruction. Over the summer months, it has become well-established, but still has room to grow. She currently has students that are interested in learning singing across the spectrum of styles. Classical, country, pop/rock, etc. She is personally comfortable performing any of these genres, and her belief is that all of these singing styles benefit from a good foundation of singing technique.
