It is About Your Passion
A Short Story of How PrivateLessons.com Got Started
By Ghenady Meirson
PrivateLessons.com, Founder Since 1996
In mid 1990s, the world began to buzz about the Internet. I was intrigued and eager to start a website that would make it easy for students to find private music teachers.
One day, after a particularly busy month of teaching at The Curtis Institute of Music, I opened an envelope containing a very nice paycheck. This, I thought, is a perfect opportunity to take action. I weighed my options carefully: rent, food and bills or a website?
PrivateLessons.com launched on June 30, 1996.
During the Internet gold rush entrepreneurs tried to reinvent life with all kinds of wild ideas. To me, Private Lessons represented much more than a quick game. It was an established cultural tradition that evolved over many centuries. It wasn't broken. There was nothing to reinvent. I believed, however, that the Internet could add real value since it held great promise as a far-reaching tool for communication and commerce.
I chose a path that respected tradition, focusing on three key drivers:
Passion: Private Lessons is about musicians and music students who are passionate about making music.
Tradition: Private Lessons is part of life, a music learning tradition that passes on from parents to children and their children.
Brand: Private Lessons is a brand stemming from tradition. It is always present in people's minds and hearts and when the time is right, they now know to look for private lessons on the web.
PrivateLessons.com was founded with money earned from teaching music. It is very satisfying to know that our loyal membership of musicians consistently re-invests in their annual memberships using income earned from giving private music lessons.
Thanks for your passion and continued support.
